The entrance to Newgrange
Proposed Itinerary (dependent on local conditions)
Day 1: Meet at noon at Dublin Airport for a ‘drive around orientation’ in Dublin, visiting key points of interest, including the famous Book of Kells at Trinity College, then on to our accommodation in the Boyne Valley north of Dublin.
Day 2: Visit the three great passage tombs of the Boyne Valley - Newgrange, the most Spectacular, is a massive mound faced with white quartz, constructed around 3000 BC, predating the pyramids by almost 1000 years. Its inner chamber, said to be one of the most powerful energy accumulators in existence, is penetrated by the sun at sunrise on the Winter Solstice, an experience now simulated for visitors. We continue to Knowth, the second passage tomb, surrounded by satellite tombs, and to Dowth, the third, which on the Solstice receives the light of the setting sun, marking the end of its cycle. Passing from the Underworld to the Overworld we proceed to Tara, a vast ceremonial complex of 40 monuments, said to the earthly dwelling place of the Tuatha de Danann, the Shining Ones, tall people who descended from Above, but eventually dwindled in legend to become the tiny fairy folk. Until 1022 Tara was the seat of the High Kings of Ireland, home to 142 Kings who were each confirmed by a human voice issuing from the Stone of Destiny, Lia Fail.
Day 3: The ancient Pagan world now blends with the Celtic and post-Celtic religious sites. We spend the morning at Kells, where monks fleeing the Vikings in 807AD completed the famous Book of Kells, and visit St. Columcille’s house and round tower. The afternoon is spent on the Hill of the Witch, Slive Na Callaigh, among the magnificent Cairns of Loughcrew.
Day 4: Begins in Sligo, home of the poet Yeats, where we visit Sligo Abbey with its famous Creevykeel Court Tomb. On to Carrowmore, the largest Megalithic complex in Ireland, dating back to 5000 BC. On the top of the Knockarea Mountains, over 300 meters high, lies the body of Maeve, fiery queen of Connacht, overlooking 30 passage tombs and enjoying a panoramic view of Sligo.
Day 5: To Inishmurray, a magical island off the coast of Sligo, inhabited for centuries but now deserted, containing the most complete remains of an early Irish monastic settlement. Founded by St. Molaise in the early 6th century, the monastery was plundered by Vikings in 802. Its five entrances can still be seen leading into a central area divided into four enclosures: the Men’s Church, the Teach Molaise Church with an equal-armed cross, the Church of Fire, and the Women’s Church. This abandoned island is sited on a Ley Line connecting Ireland with the Great Pyramid.
Day 6: Clonmacnoise, another ancient monastery plundered and burned on many occasions by the Vikings, a great centre of learning where many manuscripts were written, and from which monks sailed down the Shannon on spiritual quests into Europe, was founded in 548 AD by St. Ciaran, who died before its completion at the tender age of 33.
Day 7: Glendalough, the hauntingly beautiful Glen of the Two Lakes, houses monastery and university with churches and round tower founded by St. Kevin in the 6th century. We use the power of this sacred site to work on our Inner Awareness and Spiritual Process. We also visit Trinity Church, St. Mary’s Church, Reffert Church and St. Kevin’s Cell:
“The footprints of an elder race are here,
And memories of an old heroic time;
And shadows of an old mysterious faith,
So that the place seems haunted
And strange sounds float in the wind” Anon.
Day 8: June 14th The final day is spent in Kildare, the sanctuary where Brigid found her heaven. We visit St. Brigid’s Flame, her Holy Well and the Cathedral. Brigid is associated in Irish folklore with the gifts of poetry, healing and smithcraft, and is also identified with nature, fertility and fire. She established her abbey around 480 AD, later replaced by St. Brigid’s Cathedral. Scholars suggest that her religious order evolved from Druidic priestesses who converted to Christianity. We finish with a visit to the current Bridget Nuns in Kildare, who have rekindled the ancient flame in their suburban home and resumed their guardianship - hundreds come on pilgrimage annually from all over the world to visit them and share the amazing energy they have developed in these simple surroundings.
Tonight you conclude your day with a farewell Celtic dinner and cabaret with the group.
